When the internet went mainstream in the late 1990s, most people thought it would change retail. It did, but it also created entire categories of jobs nobody was training for: web developers, SEO specialists, UX designers, digital marketers. By 2004, when Facebook launched out of a Harvard dorm room, \"social media manager\" wasn't a job title anywhere. Five years later, companies had whole departments for it.
\nBy the early 2010s, companies were sitting on more data than they knew what to do with, and the term \"data scientist\" started appearing in job postings around 2012. A decade earlier, most of those people would have been statisticians or analysts; the role as we know it didn't exist. The rise of platforms like Uber, Airbnb, and Amazon's third-party marketplace brought another wave: trust and safety specialists, dynamic pricing analysts, platform operations roles built entirely around managing digital ecosystems at scale. Then came deep learning going mainstream, and with it, machine learning engineers, AI researchers, and eventually a whole field around AI ethics and algorithmic auditing that nobody was studying in graduate school until recently. This isn't meant to be alarming. It's just the context worth sitting with when you're thinking about what skills actually matter for kids growing up right now. The honest answer is that no one knows exactly which specific jobs will define the job market in 2035 or 2040. Anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing. What we can say with more confidence is that the skills underneath those jobs tend to be consistent, even when the tools and titles change completely. Coding teaches all of them, but not automatically. It depends a lot on how it's taught. A student who spends a year following step-by-step tutorials comes away knowing how to replicate things. A student who spends a year staring at a bug they introduced themselves, asking why it's happening, and figuring out how to fix it comes away knowing how to think. At The Coding Space, we're deliberate about which one we're building. Instructors use the Socratic Method, meaning they ask questions rather than hand over answers. A student who's stuck on why their code isn't working won't hear \"add this line here.\" They'll hear \"what do you think is happening on line 12?\" That's frustrating sometimes, especially early on. It's also exactly what makes the skill transferable later. Small class sizes matter here too. At a 4:1 ratio, there's no way to coast. Students are actually building things, not watching someone else build them. The projects are their own ideas: games, animations, tools, websites, which means they care about getting them to work. And caring about getting something to work is where most of the real learning happens. No one can future-proof a kid's career.
