If you’ve ever watched a NASCAR race on TV, you’ve seen race engineers hard at work. You know, the guys who huddle around screens trackside, with serious expressions and massive headphones? They are the Spock to the race car driver’s Kirk, the left-brains behind the whole gutsy operation. If you love coding, and you ALSO love spark plugs and showrooms, you might have a bright future as a race engineer.

WHAT IS A RACE ENGINEER?

Race engineers work with race cars, analyzing data to achieve the best performance from both vehicle and driver. Unlike some of the more hands-on jobs on a racing team, a race engineer’s work is highly analytical, focusing on things like cause and effect data processing. You won’t find a race engineer getting their hands dirty during race day. They’ll be glued to a screen with their eyes on the live data feeds.

After the race, the race engineer is responsible for gathering data from the driver and the car's various sensors and relaying that data to the factory, enabling the factory to make the correct adjustments to the car to increase performance.

WHAT SKILLS DO RACE ENGINEERS NEED?

Race engineers need lots of skills: they need strong communication skills so that they can act as the bridge between the factory and the racing team. They need good people skills, so that they can conduct themselves well in front of the media at races. They need to remain calm under pressure, so that they can stay focused and even-keeled trackside.

They also need an engineering degree – usually mechanical engineering or electrical engineering, among others. Most importantly, though, race engineers need to be knowledgeable about math, physics, data analysis, and computer science.

HOW DOES CODING EXPERTISE HELP RACE ENGINEERS?

Surprise! The world of professional car racing, like the rest of the world, is an increasingly digital one. Race engineers code and utilize software to connect to the sensors and recorders on the car, configure dashboard displays, set alarms, and more. Race engineers also need to be able to pull data from the car’s systems after every race and analyze it with the factory to determine how best to improve the car’s speed and overall performance.
